Are you worried about cybersecurity?

There are many threats out there to businesses, some in the physical world, and some in the cyber world. So, we thought we would take a closer look at a couple of the main cyber threats:

Ransomware is a form of malware that can encrypt files, so they become inaccessible to the user. The attacker demands a ransom in order to restore the victim’s access to this locked data. A recent article in Forbes ranked ransomware as the number one threat to businesses today, quoting research showing that small businesses received 94% of their detected malware via email.

Phishing is when an email seems to come from a bona fide company/individual but is actually fraudulent, and often asks people to click a link or download an attachment that dupes them into parting with information such as login credentials, passwords and credit card numbers.

If a phishing attack is successful, stolen credentials can be used by the attacker to order goods, clear out bank accounts or fraudulently spend on a credit card. In addition, if you repeatedly use the same password, they can try out the password on other common sites, such as Amazon, LinkedIn, banks or online shops, to gain access pretending to be you for duplicated credentials may be used to login to certain sites

It is a good thing to be aware of cyber threats, and just as in the physical world where you can take action to protect your home and car, with locks etc., you can also take precautions against cyberattacks and educate your staff to do the same.

For example:

  • Don’t click on links in emails
  • Don’t give your information to a website whose address does not start https, or without a padlock icon
  • Use password rotations or randomly generated passwords
  • Avoid using the same password for multiple sites
  • Install updates immediately – many of them improve security
  • Install a good firewall
  • Don’t click on pop-ups
  • Install an ad-blocker

It is also important to make sure that your systems, devices and network are protected, and your staff are trained on what to do should there be a security alert. If you are unsure whether you are adequately protected, why not book a free IT MOT today?

We hope that this blog has offered some reassurance that you really don’t have to fear IT, because help is out there! Contact R&A today to find out how to address your fears and get help to make sure your IT runs successfully and smoothly.
